Our co-op gallery exhibits fine crafts and features ceramists, woodworkers, print-makers, jewelers, textile artists, glass artists, basket weavers, natural fiber artists…and other crafters who defy classification.  We will have two available openings.

The next jury is scheduled for Monday, May14th, before our monthly membership meeting.  Each applicant must be a current full-time Maui resident, for at least 6 months, before being considered for membership and members are required to participate in operating the store and attend monthly meetings.

For more details on membership, it is necessary to review the “Letter to a Prospective Member”, ”Application Form” and “Jurying Guidelines” documents on the bottom of the “Contact” page of our website.  These documents will answer many questions about being a member of our co-op.

Before submitting an application for membership, please contact our Standards Chair-person, Jeff Johnson at 463-0122.  To submit artwork, please deliver it to the gallery, with your completed application form, on Monday, May 14th before 5:oo pm.

Jeweler Dianne Anderson will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild from April 27 until May 24, 2012. You can meet the artist during her opening reception from 6:30 to 9 PM on Friday, April 27. Refreshments and live music by Upcountry Celtic will be part of the festivities at the store in conjunction with Paia Town’s Fourth Friday celebration.

Dianne makes a free-form, flowing line of jewelry which is very distinctive in style, incorporating a variety of pearls and other stones. “To create my fine silver and gold jewelry, I mostly use the lost wax process–a method of carving the original in wax, making a plaster mold, casting in metal and then hand-finishing.”

Dianne is the daughter of noted sculptor, Paul Keith of Taos, New Mexico whose works have been commissioned world-wide. “I’m proud to be following in my father’s footsteps.”

This show will feature new work by Diane. Rather than trying to keep up with the ever-changing trends, she concentrates on her own style of designs and the creation of her free-flowing art forms. As a result, each of her pieces is a unique and beautiful piece of art.

Michi retired five years ago to Maui from New York City, where she taught printmaking and ceramics at CCNY and CUNY. This accomplished artist paints as well as crafts in ceramics and creates striking prints inspired by nature. “I love the beauty of the natural world and consider Maui to be a constant resource for my work.”, says Michi. Her accomplishments since joining the Maui art community are extensive. Michi was recently included in the Viewpoints Gallery Paint Out Exhibition as well as exhibited in several Art Maui, Honolulu Printmaker, and Hawaii Craftsman juried shows.

Maui Crafts Guild is Maui’s only artist-owned and artist-operated cooperative gallery.

This is a great opportunity to browse Diane’s latest works inspired by the ocean and the ancient Hawaiian art of petroglyphs. Diane studied at both the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York City before making Maui her island home. Her abstract works are complicated to create but easy to enjoy. Diane has a unique process of using layers of acrylic paints, pastels and metals in combination on wood or paper that create a delicate surface with a fresco-like appearance. Her Maui sunset series celebrate the magical moment of vibrant color before the sun makes its grand exit.

Tracy Lamon has been working with clay for twenty-five years and began her studies in high school, throwing on the potter’s wheel. Her first passions were plates and functional vessels, then moving onto sculptures, masks, and intricately painted ceramic tiles.  Her tropical motif tiles have a high relief design with glazes that appear as watercolors.  Hawaii’s many flora, fauna, and relaxed lifestyles dance across these decorative and functional creations. Her primitive masks are an original facial sculpture fired in burning sawdust for a raw and scorched look. They are crowned with a headdress of coconut and manila palm fronds.

Kula Jungle Designs are the original creations of long time Maui artist Joan Mercer. Her love of gardening and her background in art led her to develop unique creations from the wide variety of ferns, flowers and foliage she grows in her garden. Joan gathers her bountiful harvests, utilizing special techniques to preserve their garden freshness, unique color, and elegance forever.

Drawing on her love of animals and the vibrant creativity found in children’s art, Jennifer creates an astonishing array of colorful characters from hardshell gourds. These beautifully finished pieces are sure to put a smile on your face: exotic birds, friendly fishes, and zany surfers that can double as percussion instruments. November’s Fourth Friday also kicks off our annual Community Fundraiser. Every member of the Maui Crafts Guild – that’s 21 of us! – is donating a piece of gorgeous handcrafted functional art to our Every-Artist-Gift-Basket. Buy a raffle ticket (or two) for a chance to win it all! All proceeds will be donated to the Paia Youth Center.
