She creates Hawaiian everlasting leis, window ornaments, necklaces, earrings and mobiles. Also, new to her collection are framed collages. Always experimenting and creating, Joan’s flower universe continues to expand and flourish.

An opening reception will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 9 where patrons will have an opportunity to meet the artist and discuss her work. Refreshments will be served.

March 24, 1940 – June 8, 2010

Sandy Vitarelli, of Haiku, Maui, passed away on
June 8, 2010. She was 70 years old. Sandy was born
in Pennsylvania in 1940. Sandy was the eldest of the
five children of William and Henrietta Vitarelli. In
1950, the Vitarelli family moved to Palau in
Micronesia. After five formative years in Palau, she
left the islands to attend George School, a private
high school in Pennsylvania.

Upon graduation, she married Victor Hobson and
they raised seven children, Ward, Mark, Joe, Tom,
Martha, Madeline and Marline. The family lived in
Guam and later, in 1964 moved to Palau where
Sandy and Victor worked for the Palau Department
of Education. In the 1960s and 1970s, Sandy
developed her skills in pottery, inspired by the
ancient tradition of pottery making in Palau. She
initiated and directed an extensive ceramics art
program at the Palau High School, utilizing the local
clays of Palau.

After 15 years in Palau, Sandy and her children
moved to Haiku, Maui in 1976 where she
established her studio, Haiku Pottery. She was one of
the founders of the Maui Crafts Guild, a successful
artists’ cooperative in Paia that continues to thrive
today.

Sandy was well known in the arts community on
Maui, supporting many arts endeavors and fellow
artists. She has won awards, been selected for
exhibitions, and has received art commissions. Her
work is in the permanent collection of the State
Foundation on Culture and the Arts and private
collections.

Sandy’s distinctive style of pottery is
characterized by its functionality, bold surface
designs, story telling images and lively Pacific
island motifs. Sandy will be remembered by her
friends and family for her great generosity, warmth,
vigor, zest for life, determination, strength of spirit,
humor and unique artistic talents.

Sandy is survived by her seven children, Ward,
Mark, Joe (Jing) and Tom (Amy) Hobson, Martha
(Dr. Greg) Dever, Madeline (Lee) Hobson and
Marline (Jason) Fernandez; fifteen grandchildren,
Lindsey, Ryan, Aaron, Alan, Yna, Thomas, Kyle,
Dustin, Madison, Trever, Tianna, Nicole, David,
Joshua and Leleng. She is also survived by her four
bothers and sisters, Margo, David (Naoko), Don and
Janice (Hideyaki Miyoshi) as well as her loving and
supportive partner, Alapai Kealoha.

The family would like extend their deep
appreciation for the extensive support Sandy
received from Alapai Kealoha, Mishna Orion,
Jennifer Owen, Gail Pickholz, Joanna Barnes and
Dianne Epstein during the final years of her life.
Thank you Dr. Bernard Meyers of Kaiser and the
nurses and staff of Hospice Maui. Thank you
Masako and Greg, Dana and Isaac, Bob, Peggy,
Maryann, Harry, members of the Maui Crafts Guild
and her many other friends who were so helpful to
her in so many ways.

There will be a gathering of friends and family to celebrate Sandy’s life on Saturday, July 10th at the Baldwin Beach Pavilion at 10 AM. A potluck lunch will follow.

Theme “Maui’s Floral Majesty: Beyond Plumeria”

Braving thorns, swarming mosquitoes, blazing sun, and irate homeowners, Mr. Levine captures a rainbow of color, shape and shadow to present portraits of some of Maui’s unique flowers.

Maui has many overlooked and unique floral treasures. Some are hidden in plain sight in a neighbor’s yard and others are collected or nurtured in places like upcountry’s Enchanting Floral Gardens. Mr. Levine is a self-taught fine art photographer who finds as much inspiration from Georgia O’Keefe and Gustav Klimt as he does from the works of other photographers.

Whether it is a hybrid hibiscus in a front yard in Pukalani, the desert rose blooming in Lahaina, or the odd calico plant or corkscrew flowers
growing in the upcountry botanical garden, Stephen has combined both the patience and skill to capture the essence of shape and color for his
floral portraits.

He prints each image as a limited edition. Each is a giclee print using the highest quality ink and art papers available.

His floral portraits will be featured from April 16-30, 2010 at the Maui Crafts Guild, where his other fine art nature studies are available.

Please join us for an opening reception where you can meet the artist on Friday April 16th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Festivities will include refreshments and live music! Hope to see you there!
